19th-century shipwrecks found off Israel

Archaeologists have discovered four 19th-century warships, and possibly the remains of an ancient Greek harbor, off the coast of Israel.

The fleet was found at the ancient port of Akko, one of the major ports of the Mediterranean during the Hellenistic period from 300 B.C. to 100 B.C. The new discoveries could point to even more ancient, elusive shipwrecks.

"I'm very interested in finding a well-preserved example of an ancient multi-decked warship from the Hellenistic age," study author Bridget Buxton, an archaeologist from the University of Rhode Island, said in a statement. "These ships were incredible pieces of technology, but we don't know much about their design, because no hulls have been found. However, a combination of unusual environmental and historical factors leads us to believe we have a chance of finding the remains of one of these ships off the northern coast of Israel."

The team found the four warships in 2011 using sound waves to probe beneath the ocean floor off the coast of Akko in northern Israel. The city has been a busy port since antiquity. After storms briefly washed away some of the sediment burying the ships, the Israeli Antiquities Authority peeked into one of the 105-foot (32-meter)-long ships. Sediment has since reburied the fleet. Wood from the ship came from Turkey, laboratory analysis showed.

The researchers believe the ships, once part of an Egyptian fleet, sank during the Egyptian Ottoman war when Adm. Osman Nurredin Bey attempted to retake the city of Akko in 1831.

In the process of excavating in the area, the team also found the remains of a ship shed that was possibly used to bring in warships during the Hellenistic period. At the site, they found remnants of Hellenistic stonework, ancient pottery, mooring materials and a stone quay. These fragments suggest a much older, ancient Greek port may lie beneath the seafloor ? along with even more ancient shipwrecks.

"We've got fragmentary historic records for this area in the Hellenistic period, and now we've found a very important feature from the ancient harbor. Ancient shipwrecks are another piece of the puzzle that will help us to rewrite the story of this region at a critical time in Mediterranean history," Buxton said in a statement.

The findings were presented at the annual meeting of the American Schools of Oriental Research on Nov. 15 and 17 in Chicago.

Jeep Wrangler 10th Anniversary Edition

Few vehicles are as dedicated to off road capability as Jeep's Wrangler. And the company's Rubicon model, with 4:1 low range gearing and locking front and rear differentials takes it to another level. It's the trail boss amongst all Jeeps. To celebrate the Rubicon model's decade-long run, Jeep has a new 10th Anniversary model for 2013. The new Rubicon rocks unique bumpers with more clearance that are winch capable. The suspension has been lifted by an inch to make room for beefy 265/70R17 BF Goodrich tires. Jeep says it's simply the most capable Wrangler they've ever produced.

Kevin Durant Has NBA?s Second Best Selling Jersey, Russell Westbrook 12th

on November 28, 2012M at 7:00 am

Kevin Durant has finished second to LeBron James yet again.

This time, Durant?s runner-up finish came off the court and was out of his control.

Durant?s No. 35 Thunder jersey is the league?s second best seller based on sales at the NBA store in New York City and on NBAStore.com from April through Nov. 26. James ranked first for the third times since 2001.

But this is the highest Durant has climbed on the list of the league?s most popular jerseys. In the league?s previous survey of the top 15 most popular jerseys Durant ranked eighth. He ranked seventh in April 2011 but fell one spot after the Dallas Mavericks? championship shot Dirk Nowitzki into the top 15 at No. 7. Durant ranked ninth in April 2010 and 15th in January 2010, which was his first time in the top 10 since his rookie season.

Russell Westbrook, meanwhile, debuts in the top 15 at No. 12, in between fellow point guards Deron Williams (11th) and Steve Nash (13th).

Rounding out the top 10 are Kobe Bryant, Carmelo Anthony, Derrick Rose, Rajon Rondo, Dwyane Wade, Blake Griffin, Dwight Howard and Chris Paul. Paul Pierce ranked 14th and Nowitzki was 15th.

The Thunder is the sixth most popular selling team, ranking in the top 10 for the third straight time. In April, the Thunder ranked seventh. In April 2011, the Thunder again ranked sixth.

New York is the league?s top-selling team for the first time since December 2004. Miami ranks second. The Los Angeles Lakers are third despite being the only team to have three players among the top 15 best selling jerseys. Chicago and Boston rank fourth and fifth, respectively.

Brooklyn ranks seventh, followed by the Los Angeles Clippers, San Antonio and Dallas.

Durant has been beaten out consistently by James for awards, accolades and accomplishments over the past three seasons, most notably in last year?s NBA Finals matchup between the Thunder and Heat. James also has secured two of the past three regular season MVP trophies, winning both over Durant. In mid-May, after finishing 185 points shy of James for MVP honors, Durant jokingly said he?s grown tired of second-place finishes.

?I?ve been second since high school,? Durant said. ?Second draft pick. Second best player (in the country behind Greg Oden) in high school. Second in MVP voting twice. So I?m over that being second stuff.?

In the Thunder?s season opener at San Antonio, Durant became the second youngest player to reach the 10,000-point milestone. He joined the club at 24 years, 34 days old.

The youngest to get there?

LeBron James, of course.

Brazil deforestation hits record low

BRASILIA, Brazil (AP) ? Deforestation in Brazil's Amazon rainforest has dropped to its lowest level in 24 years, the government said Tuesday.

Satellite imagery showed that 1,798 square miles (4,656 square kilometers) of the Amazon were deforested between August 2011 and July 2012, Environment Minister Izabella Teixeira said a news conference. That's 27 percent less than the 2,478 square miles (6,418 square kilometers) deforested a year earlier. The margin of error is 10 percentage points.

Brazil's National Institute for Space Research said the deforestation level is the lowest since it started measuring the destruction of the rainforest in 1988.

Sixty-three percent of the rainforest's 2.4 million square miles (6.1 million square kilometers) are in Brazil.

The space institute said that the latest figures show that Brazil is close to its 2020 target of reducing deforestation by 80 percent from 1990 levels. Through July 2012 deforestation dropped by 76.26 percent.

George Pinto a director of Ibama, Brazil's environmental protection agency, told reporters that better enforcement of environmental laws and improved surveillance technology are behind the drop in deforestation levels.

Pinto said that in the 12-month period a total of 2,000 square meters of illegally felled timber were seized by government agents. The impounded lumber is sold in auctions and the money obtained is invested in environmental preservation programs.

Environment Minister Teixeira said that starting next year Brazil will start using satellite monitoring technology to detect illegal logging and slash-and-burn activity and issue fines.

"Over the past several years Brazil has made a huge effort to contain deforestation and the latest figures testify to its success," said Adalberto Verissimo, a senior researcher at Imazon, an environmental watchdog agency. "The deforestation figures are extremely positive, for they point to a consistent downward trend."

"The numbers disprove the argument that deforestation is necessary for the country's economy to grow, he said by telephone from his office in the Amazon city of Belem." Deforestation has been dropping steadily for the past four years while the economy has grown," he said

"But the war is far from over. We still have a lot of battles to fight and win."

For Marcio Astrini, Greenpeace coordinator in the Amazon region, said the lower figures show that reducing deforestation is perfectly possible, but he added that "the numbers are still too high for a country that does not have to destroy one single hectare in order to develop."

Grove Professor Receives $1.5MM to Study Breast Cancer - CUNY

Debra Auguste

Dr. Debra Auguste, associate professor of biomedical engineering, Grove School of Engineering

For some time, researchers have known about disparities in diagnoses and outcomes among breast cancer patients based on race and age. However, they have been challenged to develop a set of criteria that can be used to reliably target drug delivery mechanisms based on an individual patient?s tumor.

Dr. Debra Auguste, associate professor of biomedical engineering in the Grove School of Engineering at The City College of New York, will investigate personalized therapies to inhibit breast cancer metastasis supported by the National Institutes of Health Director?s New Innovator Award. The grant, which provides $1.5 million over five years, funds ?exceptionally creative new investigators who propose highly innovative projects that have the potential for unusually high impact.?

?By applying our knowledge and experience in chemical engineering, materials science and nanotechnology, we hope to develop therapeutics that will increase breast cancer patient survival by inhibiting tumor progression and metastasis,? said Professor Auguste, who joined the Grove School faculty in September from the Harvard University School of Engineering and Applied Science.

?Our goal is to use biological information to design new drug delivery vehicles that can target tumors. We have been studying what the cell surface looks like, how proteins relate to one another, how they are organized and what their ratios are.?

The strategy marks a departure from other investigations that have focused on the role of messenger RNA, which is transcribed into proteins. ?People often think if you have a large amount of messenger RNA you have a large amount of protein, but we don?t necessarily know how much protein is being produced,? she said.

Current breast cancer treatments are regulated by cell surface presentation. For example, breast cancer cells that express estrogen receptor and human epidermal growth receptor-2 on their surface are treated with hormone (anti-estrogen or aromatase inhibitors) or targeted therapies such as the monoclonal antibody trastuzamab (Herceptin), respectively.

Professor Auguste plans to develop personalized treatment approaches for four metastatic breast cancer populations: black women, white women, women over 40 and women under 40. Epidemiological studies have found that white women are more likely than black women to be diagnosed with breast cancer, however black women are more likely to die from it. In addition, women under 40 are more prone to aggressive forms of the disease.

She expects to characterize the surface density and proximity of two receptors that govern cell recruitment: CXC chemokine receptor type 4 (CXCR4) and CC chemokine receptor type 7 (CCR7). This information will then be used to synthesize complementary engineered liposomes (CELs) that cooperatively bind CXCR4 and CCR7 and deliver short interfering RNA (siRNA) to knock down lipocalin-2 (Lcn2), which has been shown to induce the epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT).

Lipocalins are a family of proteins that transport small, hydrophobic molecules such as steroids, retinoids and lipids. A growing body of evidence points to the EMT playing a role in metastasis of cancers.

Professor Auguste hopes to produce CEL therapies that will enhance cooperative binding to each cell type and reduce cell migration and invasion. Homogeneous and biphasic CELs are designed to complement the relative surface density and organization of receptors on breast cancer cells. They do so by allowing conjugated antibodies to rearrange on the surface or by clustering antibodies within gel-phase lipid domains.

?The binding event is regulated by multiple receptors. We need to understand how multiple proteins work together to engineer adhesion,? she explained. ?If we can understand that, we can hopefully go from a non-adhesive vehicle to one that is adhesive in order to trigger a favorable response. The key is adhesion of the drug delivery vehicle to tumor cells.?

In previous research targeting cytokine-activated endothelial cells, Professor Auguste reported evidence that vehicles that complement the cell surface enhance binding.

Professor Auguste plans to encapsulate cancer drugs inside a lipid shell that will be very similar to a cell membrane and decorate the shell with one or more antibodies arranged in different ratios. She also intends to ?play around? with the molecules? surface mobility and organization. ?We?ll test lots of different engineering parameters in order to achieve optimal efficacy.?

To assess the effect of CEL on cell migration, activation survival and the EMT process, she will conduct mechanistic studies involving the expression of various proteins and enzymes.

Professor Auguste intends to demonstrate similarities and differences among six different breast cancer cell lines and deliver a platform technology designed to address tumor metastasis. The cell lines chosen represent the most metastatic and invasive forms of breast cancer with the poorest prognoses for survival. ?We want to learn what is different about these breast cancers and whether we can develop a better treatment that can more effectively target the tumor and control it,? she said.

NIH established the Director?s New Innovator Award to address two important goals: stimulating highly innovative research and supporting promising new investigators. It differs from traditional NIH grants in that it is designed specifically to support unusually creative new investigators with highly innovative research ideas at an early stage of their career when they may lack the preliminary data required for an R01 grant. In 2012, 51 such awards were granted nationally.

Galapagos tortoises are a migrating species

ScienceDaily (Nov. 27, 2012) ? The Galapagos giant tortoise, one of the most fascinating species of the Galapagos archipelago, treks slowly and untiringly across the volcanic slopes. Scientists of the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology in Radolfzell, together with the Charles Darwin Foundation, have used GPS technology and modern 3D acceleration measurements to find out that especially the dominant male tortoise wanders up to 10 kilometres into the highlands of the island. Only the fully grown animals migrate, the young tortoises stay year round in the lowlands. The reason for this and the question of why the animals don't rest during the dry season are not known yet.

The large, dominant male Galapagos giant tortoises usually start their annual migration at the beginning of the dry season.

Even Charles Darwin anticipated that the giant tortoises wandered large distances. In the cool dry season, the highlands of Santa Cruz are engulfed in fog which allows the vegetation to grow despite the lack of rain. In the lowlands, however, there is no thick layer of clouds and the tortoises' vegetation is not available year round. Adults, which can weigh up to 250 kilogram, spend the dry season in the higher regions at an elevation of 400 meters above sea level. However, since the food is not as nutritious there, they trek back to the lower zones where there is succulent vegetation in abundance as soon as the rainy season begins.

In order to study the migratory pattern more closely, Stephen Blake from the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology and his colleague Washington Tapia from the Galapagos National Park secured GPS loggers with 3D acceleration monitors onto 17 adult tortoises. This allowed the scientists to determine the animals' exact position and behaviour over a period of two years. In order to gather information on the entire population, the researchers noted the size, sex and location of each tortoise they met on their monthly hikes along the volcanic hillsides. They combined the GPS data with the temperature data and information about availability of vegetation.

The results show that the tortoises have a partial migration system, where not every individual migrates. Only the adult animals wander and only the larger specimens are more likely to move. In June they start their slow, tedious march which can be up to ten kilometres long into the highlands. Adult females remain in the lowlands until they lay their eggs and then they also make their way to the highlands. In contrast, the smaller tortoises stay in the lower elevated areas all year round.

Although giant tortoises are able to survive for up to one year without nourishment, which made them a popular staple for seamen, they nevertheless wander for large distances searching for food as this study shows for the first time. Why don't they just look for a shelter? The question of why the younger animals don't migrate hasn't been answered by the scientists yet. "Either the energy expenditure of this strenuous hike is too high, or there is still enough food available for the smaller animals." Stephen Blake suspects, "perhaps the younger animals can't tolerate the wet cold climate of the higher regions."

In other species, the largest and the most dominant individual does not migrate because it can best defend itself against its competitors. It doesn't have to leave to survive. However, among the Galapagos tortoises, it's usually the largest and most dominant individual which takes on this arduous journey.

Future studies on giant tortoise species of the other Galapagos Islands with varying ecological conditions will show how environment influences the migration scheme of these closely related reptiles. The scientists also want to include factors such as age, size, sex and morphology in their studies to see why the behaviour changes in different lifetime stages and what the trigger of migration is.

Despite the threat of hunting, invasive species such as goats and rats, and the loss of habitat due to man, the Galapagos Tortoise still shows its original migrating behaviour. This and future studies will help to maintain this behaviour with the help of effective measures such as establishing corridors, preserving key habitats, keeping tortoise-friendly roads and maintaining less urban development. Based on its importance to the Galapagos Archipelago ecosystem as an herbivore and seed disperser, the annual migration of the tortoise must be preserved.

Its a Wonderful Movie: Reviews for Hitched for the Holidays and More!

Hello Everybody...

I certainly hope you all had a wonderful and most importantly, memorable - Thanksgiving Weekend! Four generations of family gathered at our home, and each year I learn... giving thanks and being with those you love is better than any feast or delicious dessert!

undefined
I took a little blogging break over the weekend, but was delighted to see my inbox was filled this morning with various comments and reviews of this weekends Christmas movies, from Many of You! Either you loved them or ... let's just say you didn't love them.

Anyway, Hitched for the Holidays seems to have been a strong winner, and I would have to agree! It was adorable, witty, and loads of fun! Joey Lawrence was fantastic!

One person shared: "This was suprisingly wonderful! This is the best Hallmark holiday movie of the season!"

Plus, it wasn't just a great Christmas Movie - it also included Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, and New Years Eve! It was one of those movies you just know you'll look forward to watching over and over again!

As for other Movies - Naughty or Nice got mixed reviews. Some said it was cute while others didn't like her boring cheating boyfriend, Australian sounding boss, or klepto neighbor. I agree with both points of view on this one. The elf moments at the mall were super funny, especially with her new co-worker! And, the Naughty or Nice book was kind of fun - made me wish I could have one!

Let's see... you thought the?Jingle and Bell's Christmas Star cartoon was Sweet. Me too! Heartland Christmas was warm and family friendly. Favorite part - Christmas Day Dinner with the family and Frosty (at the end)!

Golden Christmas 3 was a blend of the original two movies ? A Golden Christmas and A Golden Christmas 2. Again, the dogs must help play match-maker by running off and forcing their owners to chase them ? and run into (literally) their first love. The second one is still my favorite of the series.

I didn't get a chance to personally see GMC's The Christmas Angel or any of Lifetime's new Christmas Movies, but I appreciated you all letting me know what you thought. You thought The Christmas Angel was Great - but the Lifetime Movies Not-so-Great. One person did say they liked The March Sisters at Christmas while several others said they did not - and Love at the Christmas Table, someone shared that it is just not good.

No Reviews have come in, yet, for Home Alone : The Holiday Heist. I'm sure it is hard for them to be compared to the original.

So... what do you think? Did you have a nice Thanksgiving? Did you see any of these new Christmas Movies over the weekend? I would love to hear from you, too!

From degeneration to regeneration: Advances in skeletal muscle engineering

ScienceDaily (Nov. 26, 2012) ? A study published today in BioMed Central?s open access journal Skeletal Muscle reports of a new therapeutic technique to repair and rebuild muscle for sufferers of degenerative muscle disorders. The therapy brings together two existing techniques for muscle repair ? cell transplantation and tissue engineering ? specifically, mesoangioblast stem cells delivered via a hydrogel cell-carrier matrix.

A number of conditions can lead to considerable degeneration or loss of skeletal muscle and, since skeletal muscle has a limited capacity for self repair, therapies for muscle reconstruction or regeneration are often necessary. There are currently two ways to rebuild muscle: cell transplantation, whereby stem cells are injected directly into the muscle or arteries, and tissue engineering, whereby cells are embedded on a biomaterial scaffold to reconstruct a whole muscle.

Stem cell transplantation on its own can be limited by poor cell survival, but the authors hoped that the technique in combination with tissue engineering could increase the chances of efficacy for localized disorders of muscle.

The research team, comprised of researchers from institutions all over Europe, embedded Mab cells within a polyethylene glycol and fibrinogen (PF) hydrogel scaffold that has a proven track record in tissue and cardiac engineering. The Mab/PF grafts were then injected into mice, directly into the chronically inflamed and sclerotic regions typical of the advanced stages of muscular dystrophy. The team observed increased engraftment and survival of Mabs when injected with PF than with Mabs suspended in saline solution.

Five weeks after treatment, analyses revealed that Mabs had better integrated into regenerating muscle fibers when used with a PF carrier than when used without. In addition, there was better organization of muscle fibers when Mabs was used in combination with PF.

Lead author Cesare Gargioli commented, ?This study demonstrates a novel tissue engineering approach that is capable of producing enriched donor cell engraftment into skeletal muscle after an acute injury or in more-difficult-to-treat advanced-stage muscular dystrophy. Both Mabs and PF are currently undergoing separate clinical trials, but their combined use may increase efficacy for sufferers with more localized forms of muscular dystrophy or disorders that lead to damage of skeletal muscle, including hernias and sphincter disorders.?

At least two killed in attack on Pakistan Shi'ite gathering

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (Reuters) - A suspected suicide bomber killed at least two people and wounded dozens near a Shi'ite procession in Pakistan on Sunday, as the minority sect braced for major attacks by Sunni militants during a critical event in their religious calendar.

Television footage of the blast site showed the wounded being carried away in the northwestern city of Dera Ismail Khan, where a bomb targeting Shi'ites killed at least seven people, including four children, on Saturday.

Hardline sectarian Sunni groups, which are becoming increasingly dangerous in nuclear-armed Pakistan, have threatened more attacks as the Shi'ite morning month of Muharram comes to a climax on Sunday.

German military analysis of peak oil now available thumbnail

Complete English translation of German military analysis of peak oil now available

Last week the Bundeswehr posted an English version (112 pgs) of their extraordinary analysis of peak oil. The original German document (125 pgs) was approved for public release last November, yet neither the complete German version nor the partial English translation has attracted interest from mainstream media.

Now that a complete translation is available, it is hoped that media throughout the English-speaking world will see the Bundeswehr study for what it is: a comprehensive, realistic analysis of one of the most formidable challenges of this century, the (potentially imminent) peaking of global oil production.

Download the English version of the report here.

(AP) ? Not many young quarterbacks would even have the audacity to imagine making their first career starts under the circumstances surrounding Max Wittek at the Coliseum on Saturday night.

The freshman is replacing Matt Barkley, an injured senior who has claimed most of the career passing records at Southern California. He's facing Notre Dame (11-0), a storied football power with a No. 1 ranking and the nation's most feared defense.

The Irish need just one more win to book a spot in the national title game, and the struggling Trojans (7-4) have lost three of four. Yet Wittek also has arguably the best receiving duo in the nation catching his passes and a sold-out stadium firmly at his back.

If the enormity of this occasion is scaring Wittek, the confident 19-year-old with a bigger arm than Barkley hasn't shown it a bit.

"You really can't ask for a better opportunity to show what you've got," Wittek said. "I just want to get that first snap, maybe that first hit, out of the way, and I'll be ready to go."

Although USC has dominated the past decade in this delicious intersectional rivalry, winning nine of 10 and missing a clean sweep by one dropped touchdown pass two years ago, Wittek and the Trojans realize most of the pressure is on the other sideline this time.

The Irish are just one win away from completing a remarkable run to the BCS title game in coach Brian Kelly's third season. With so many pressure-packed wins already behind them this season, the Irish will hit the field in downtown Los Angeles simply trying not to get caught up in the matchup's history ? or the history they'll make with a victory.

"You think about it," Notre Dame safety Zeke Motta said. "In the back of your mind, it's there that if you win this game, you're going to play in the national championship. What more motivation do you need? But I think we want to treat it like any other game. Obviously it's a rivalry game, so we're going to be playing fierce and tough. We're just focused on who we're playing against and sticking it to them."

Notre Dame has done its part to make the schools' 84th meeting appropriately memorable. The Irish headed to the Coliseum with the No. 1 ranking for the sixth time in the schools' shared history, and they're unbeaten when facing USC for the first time since 1993.

USC is headed to a lower-tier bowl game, but could halt its late-season slide from the preseason No. 1 ranking by crushing the Irish's title dreams. USC has stumbled after a 6-1 start to a season of enormous expectations, losing to Arizona, Oregon and UCLA in the previous four weeks.

"This is a game where we can get our respect back and get a good feeling about ourselves," USC safety T.J. McDonald said.

Both teams are made up of teenagers and young adults who can't possibly have the same connection to this rivalry as thousands of alumni, former players or football fans who simply enjoy the college sport's best traditions. The USC coaching staff attempted to remedy some of those educational gaps this week, with coach Lane Kiffin and defensive coordinator Ed Orgeron speaking up in team meetings about the series' meaning and lore.

Kiffin also played Notre Dame's fight song during USC's practices this week, hoping to remind the Trojans of their 31-17 upset win in South Bend last year.

"My dad never beat them, so he definitely has a chip on his shoulder when it comes to this rivalry," said McDonald, whose father, Tim, also was a defensive back at USC. "All of the Trojan family is watching. Everyone wants to see how the Trojans are going to play, how they're going to respond from last week. We've just got to be able to go out there and make a statement."

Everybody on the USC offense knows all about the imposing Irish defense led by linebacker Manti Te'o, which has allowed just 10.1 points per game and eight touchdowns all season. Notre Dame's punishing run defense has been almost impenetrable, but its pass defense has yet to be tested by an offense with USC's talent ? even with a freshman quarterback at the controls.

Wittek has played only sparingly this season, but has known he would be under the spotlight this week since the injured Barkley texted him after last week's loss: "Let's go beat the Irish."

After two full years of practice in Kiffin's offense, Wittek is eager to show the Trojans won't have to keep it simple as they did two years ago, when backup Mitch Mustain filled in for the injured Barkley in Notre Dame's 20-16 win at the Coliseum.

"They're a great defense, obviously one of the top defenses in the NCAA, but every defense does have their soft spots," Wittek said. "Theirs are obviously limited in being such a great defense, but we are looking forward to taking advantage of some of those soft spots."

Wittek's confidence doesn't seem so outlandish given the talent around him: receivers Marqise Lee and Robert Woods along with tailbacks Curtis McNeal and Silas Redd. Wittek's teammates are completely familiar with the quarterback who got about 25 percent of the first-team snaps in practice this year ? and he's superior to the decorated Barkley in at least one area.

"Max throws much harder. It hurts," Lee said with a laugh. "I have faith in Max. I know he can do it. It's about waiting for your time, and his time is here."

If the Trojans can crack Notre Dame's vaunted defense, the Irish offense will be required to produce a big game against USC's struggling defense. USC's last four opponents have combined for 156 points, and Notre Dame quarterback Everett Golson is coming off a 346-yard passing performance against Wake Forest ? the seventh-biggest in school history, accomplished in just 2? quarters, no less.

But every number in Notre Dame's favor won't matter when the Trojans go after a historic upset in a rivalry series full of unexpected twists. The Irish understand the perils looming in those 60 minutes before they earn the right to play for another national title.

"It's very exciting," Notre Dame center Braxston Cave said. "This is what guys come to Notre Dame for. We've finally got the program back to where it belongs, and I think guys are really excited about that."

Damage Control Relationship Tarot Spread ? Love Dove Tarot

Did it all go pear-shaped in the wake of the Eclipse? Did you find yourself doing or saying something really stupid that may have jeopardised your relationship in spite of the very best intentions and in spite of heeding the advice given in Five Relationship Survival Tips for the Shift?

You?re not alone! Relax and know that it happened for a reason. This shit needed to shift in time for the Shift? so it came out. Collateral damage was unavoidable. Forgive yourself and do the Damage Control Relationship Tarot Spread instead of wallowing.

tarot spread image

1. That shit you said or did (if you?re like me you probably maxed out on both words and doing stupid shit) that caused damage to the relationship
2. The underlying reason for your action (indicates what has come up for healing)
3. How this put a wedge between you and your beloved
4. What reaction this triggered in your beloved
5. How he retaliated or withdrew?
6. Grace to be invoked from on High (pull an Angel card for this one)
7. Your best possible reconciliatory move
8. Most likely outcome

SAMPLE READING

1. Death.?The preemptive strike card in this position. End things before the other person gets a chance to do so. Say something so repulsive that they have no other option but to cut you out completely. I find it works every time.

2. The Queen of Coins. An indication that the real reason for the preemptive strike was a fear of a need to be nurtured not being met. The Queen of Coins is the Earth Mother. She always has a warm hug to go with the hot meal for those who have been left out in the cold ? especially children and animals.

3. The Emperor. The heavy artillery was brought out and there is no going back once that has been done. Power dynamics were engaged in and fragile love was trampled by heavy military boots.

4. The Wheel of Fortune. Perhaps he thought it was all a trick by fate? Some kind of sick joke. Or perhaps he thought the timing was horribly off. Either way, he felt as if it was out of his hands.

5. The Queen of Swords. With her help he finished things swiftly. The bridges were burned. Adieu.

6. Reconciliatory grace from on High would be found in Heart-to-Heart conversations. Quite aptly in the Romance Angels card though, she is the one doing the talking and he listens quietly. Pray for grace to open the channels of communication.

7. The Devil. More shadow work ahead before the smoke clears. Most likely without the grace aspect. This is harsh, brutal and probably necessary. Karmic even.

8. 9 of Cups. Joy restored. A completion of a cycle of lessons about the power of emotions. Phew!

Actelion says lung drug macitentan submitted in Europe

ZURICH (Reuters) - Actelion has submitted heart and lung drug macitentan to European health regulators, the second major step for the drug the Swiss group is positioning as a viable successor to its current top seller.

"The European Medicines Agency will now start the formal review process," Actelion said on Thursday. It plans to sell the drug under the brand name Opsumit.

Actelion, which submitted the treatment to the U.S. health regulator a month ago, issued data last month showing macitentan prolonged overall survival by more than a third in a clinical trial.

The company is banking on macitentan to replace top-seller Tracleer which, like macitentan, also treats pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) and currently accounts for around 90 percent of group sales. Tracleer goes off patent from 2015 and faces growing competition from Gilead's Letairis.

Actelion is continuing to prepare macitentan submissions in Switzerland and major markets around the world, the company said.

The Wall Street Journal reports:

After crunching two to six years' worth of pricing data for a number of typical holiday gifts, The Wall Street Journal has turned up the best times to go deal hunting ? and they almost never involve standing in the freezing cold all night.

It turns out that gifts from Barbie dolls to watches to blenders are often priced below Black Friday levels at various times throughout the year, even during the holiday season, and their prices follow different trajectories as the remaining shopping days tick down.

Best Buy will be opening its doors to Black Friday shoppers at 12 a.m. on Friday. The world?s largest consumer-electronics retailer is resisting the "Thanksgiving Creep" that has led many retailers, like Walmart, to kick off Black Friday earlier than ever on Thanksgiving Day.

Some Best Buy shoppers, like Tony Avitar, are so excited for Black Friday they got in line one week in advance of the sale.

HuffPost's Alice Hines reports from Dallas, Texas:

On Thanksgiving afternoon, as freshly stuffed Americans prepared for the shopping bacchanal known as Black Friday, hundreds of Walmart workers readied themselves for a wholly different experience: joining strikes and labor actions planned for the next two days at some 1,000 Walmart stores around the country.

Here in Dallas, as well as in Miami and the San Francisco area, Walmart employees were planning to walk off work and demonstrate early Thursday evening, as shoppers began to arrive in pursuit of the ultra-cheap deals known as doorbusters. The strikers sought to protest low wages and a lack of benefits, while also challenging what they allege has been a pattern of Walmart's retaliation against workers who try to organize. They hoped to use the Black Friday spotlight to sway shoppers to their side.

"It's a question of education," said Josue Mata, a maintenance worker at Walmart in Wheatland, Texas, and a member of OUR Walmart, the labor group that is coordinating the strikes. "We have to show people that we're not just a crazy bunch of protesters."

Black Friday may be famous for its door busting deals, but it?s infamous for the ridiculous and sometimes terrifying things people do on the big day to save big bucks. From the waffle maker riot that broke out near Little Rock, Arkansas to the pepper spray incident in Los Angeles, Calif. last year?s Black Friday was filled with horror stories and nightmares.

What will happen this year? We want to hear from you. Please share your Black Friday pics and tips to money@huffingtonpost.com. Make sure to follow our liveblog for updates on the latest in Black Friday drama, sales and more. Be careful and stay safe!

HuffPost's Senior Science Editor David Freeman on the science behind Black Friday:

I'm not big on crowds, and I hate standing in line. Maybe that's why I find Black Friday so hard to fathom. I mean, I like bargains as much as the next guy. But unlike the 147 million people who the National Retail Federation expects to shop this Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, I'm not especially eager to spend the day sardined at the local hypermart just for a chance to save a buck on a Furby.

Is Black Friday really all about bargains? I suppose that's what most shoppers would say -- and what retailers would have us believe. But while I don't doubt that it's possible to save some green on Black Friday, researchers say the retailing riot that defines the day after Thanksgiving may be less about dollars than about basic psychology.

If you've ever tried shopping on Black Friday, you know that everything about the experience suggests the activities of insane human beings.

You know what I mean: Setting your alarm clock -- on a day off of work! -- for the ungodly hours between when the bars close and the bagel shops open; waiting in long lines in the bleak, cold weather for the privilege of frittering away your hard-earned money; throwing items into your shopping cart so that you run up your bill in order to break the price barrier to get that free paper shredder that you don't even need; and, worst of all, dealing with swarming crowds, high tempers, rightfully exhausted employees and a casual disregard for your fellow man.

Why not stay home this year? There are plenty of ways to get your Black Friday shopping done from the comfort of your barcalounger or waterbed, if you know where to point your mouse. We've got a few tips here.
